Groovin’ Around The Bay – May 6, 2011

The Jazz Crusaders – “The Freedom Sound”

Greetings! This column is a way for me to jump start back into writing on the regular. I am sure you want to see more here than just videos and press releases (not that those are bad things!!!) I am often asked what is happening in jazz on any given night around the Bay Area. I am not trying to rival my friends at JazzWest or KCSM Jazz Datebook as they do a fine job of providing a comprehensive listing of the Bay Area jazz scene. I will just bring you my own spin on the jazz scene and other events in an “easy to fall in love with” format. Just call me ambitious. Let’s get started!!!

Happy Mother’s Day to my moms in Heaven and on Earth!

My Picks for the Weekend:

The Jazz Crusaders featuring: Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson and Wilton Felder @ Yoshi’s Oakland – thru Sunday (I heard them last night and they were amazing!!!)
The Grassroots Composers Ensemble @ EastSide Arts Cultural Center Tonight 8 p.m. (A best kept secret in East Oakland! These cats are bad!)
Clifford Brown III & The Brewing Co. @ Disco Volante Oakland – Celebrating their new release, “Released.” Tonight 9 p.m.
The Parallax Quartet @ The Jazzschool in Berkeley featuring Anthony Diamond, alto sax; Kwami Coleman, piano and Rhodes; Jeff Chambers, bass; and Eddie Marshall, drums. Saturday 8 p.m.
Don’t forget about check out The Birdland Jazzista Social Club in Berkeley for great jazz weekly on Friday and Saturday nights.

Come back a little later and I will tell you about my week in music including Valerie Troutt, Rachelle Ferrell, Joe Lovano, and The Jazz Crusaders.
