Clairdee - who describes herself as a “jazz-inspired” storyteller – is a Bay Area jazz artist who has toured nationally and internationally and shared the bill with the likes of Etta James, the Count Basie Orchestra, Gladys Knight, Johnny Mathis, Eddie Henderson and Billy Higgins to name a few.

Jazz reviewer Andrew Gilbert writes: With her lustrous voice and soulful delivery, she hearkens back to a time when jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues often blended seamlessly together. Combining scene-stealing charisma with heartfelt humility and a sincere belief in the transformative power of music, Clairdee has honed a repertoire of standards set to state of the art arrangements that are equally smart and entertaining.

The May 18 performance will showcase Clairdee’s sophisticated yet contemporary flair with classic American songs by such composers as the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Jobim, and Cole Porter. "I choose songs that have relevance to my life experiences and to human vulnerabilities. I want the music I sing to stir emotions and touch each listener."

She appears with pianist/arranger Ken French and his trio.

The concert at Oakland 's Chapel of the Chimes on May 18th will be followed by an artist reception where the public can meet the artist, enjoy refreshments and purchase CDs.

Jazz at the Chimes is a monthly series sponsored by the Lifemark Group Arts program that features Bay Area talent. Concerts are held at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland – a designated City of Oakland Landmark designed by Julia Morgan. The Chapel provides a wonderful visual backdrop and acoustic listening venue for live music in a setting like no other.

Smithsonian drives national effort to promote America's native art form

SAN JOSE, CA. March 18, 2008 – San Jose Jazz today announced programs to celebrate April 2008 as Jazz Appreciation Month in Silicon Valley. Programs include a new concert series in conjunction with City Lights Theater, exhibits at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, a lecture series conducted by world famous jazz personalities, and master classes at the Tait Museum in Los Gatos.

The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History has led this initiative and has enlisted a distinguished roster of federal agencies and departments, non-governmental organizations, foundations, and broadcasting networks. The U.S. Congress passed legislation which was signed by the President in August 2003, Public Law 108-72, declaring “(1) the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History should be commended for establishing a Jazz Appreciation Month; and (2) musicians, schools, colleges, libraries, concert halls, museums, radio and television stations, and other organizations should develop programs to explore, perpetuate, and honor jazz as a national and world treasure.”

The concept is simple: designate one month for an annual public spotlight on jazz. Jazz Appreciation Month (or JAM) is intended to draw public attention to the glories of jazz as both an historical and a living treasure. The purpose of JAM is to draw greater public attention to the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz and its importance as an American cultural heritage. In addition, JAM is intended to stimulate the current jazz scene and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz—to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and support institutional jazz programs. JAM is needed because many people do not fully appreciate the joys, power, and glories of jazz. The celebration this month is an effort by those who are passionate about jazz to share it with those who are not as familiar with it. JAM will encourage people to take jazz more seriously as a vital part of America’s cultural patrimony and as a great gift to the world, as well as to have fun with it. During April, San Jose Jazz, producers of the annual Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival presented by Southwest Airlines, presents a jazz workshop, lectures, concerts and a photo exhibit to celebrate Jazz in downtown San Jose.

The works of four jazz photographers, Tom Ehrlich, Peter Maiden, Andy Nozaka, and Walter Wagner, offer an exceptional insight into jazz music and jazz musicians’ life. Exhibit runs from April 1 through April 30. On Tuesdays in April at 7pm, lectures present the world that encompasses jazz: how jazz started, how to listen to jazz, and where jazz is now heading. Featured speakers include:

April 8th: Richard Scheinin (Writer for the Mercury News)
April 15th: Bob Parlocha (Radio personality and musician)
April 22nd: John Santos (Latin Jazz)

Master Jazz Workshop For Youth

San Jose Jazz’s team of Musician/Educators will hold a one-day special Master Class for young aspiring jazz musicians as part of an ongoing program coordinated by the Los Gatos “Jazz on the Plazz” program. San Jose Jazz is renowned for its “Get Jazzed” curriculum for youth in the Bay Area. The program will feature master teachers saxophonist, Kristen Strom and jazz guitarist, Scott Sorkin.

By the time I post this entry, you will have bought your tickets already. Or you may be like me and trying to decide how many times you will see her during this run. It has been about 3 years since I have seen Lizz Wright in concert. She is at Yoshi's this week promoting her new Verve release, The Orchard, which hit the stores on 2/26. I have listened to it a couple of times and like what I have heard so far. I am most happy that she gets to sing the music that she enjoys. Stop back soon for a review of her concert and the new album.

I am a little behind on concerts this season but I definitely do not want to miss seeing Paula West at the new Rrazz Room in The Hotel Nikko in San Francisco. Paula will be playing there through Sunday, March 16. I have been enjoying her music since I saw her perform Oscar Brown's classic tune, "The Snake," (which has become her signature song) at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2004. She divides her time singing between San Francisco and New York City and the world beyond. Paula has the ability to blow the dust off a classic song and bring new life to it. Her phrasing is impeccable and the way she interprets a lyric is incredible. In addition, she can give you extensive history on every song in her repertoire. She is definitely not to be missed. See you there!

My mom and I took this photo in June 2007 at Lawry's Prime Rib in Chicago after we went to see The Color Purple. It was definitely a fun day and one of our last fun outings.

Today, 01/29/2008, my mom passed after battling with lung cancer. Thank you for all your love and prayers.
