I love this time of year at Yoshi’s Jazz and Supper Club in Oakland. The new year brings some wonderful performers to the club. This is also when I am breaking my piggy bank trying to go see as many acts as possible.
The Jacky Terrasson Trio will be performing Tuesday through Thursday of this week at 8 and 10pm. The trio features Jacky Terrasson on piano, Sean Smith on bass and Eric Harland on drums. Tickets are half-price for the 10pm show.
The following week legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner will begin his 9th annual two-week residency at Yoshi’s. In week one (1/21 – 1/26), McCoy is joined by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson , bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jack DeJohnette. In week two (1/28 – 2/2), McCoy leads a trio with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash. I attended both week’s of his residency last year and am definitely planning to do so this year as well. These two weeks sell out quickly so get your tickets early.
A couple of romantic and enchanting evenings with Ledisi on Tuesday, 2/11 and Wednesday, 2/12. Shows at 8 and 10pm.
Pieces Of A Dream will be warming your heart with their contemporary R&B and jazz from Thursday, 2/13 through Sunday, 2/16. Shows at 8 and 10pm. I have been enjoying this group since their first album in 1981 so I am sure this will be a great show.
The James Carter Trio with special guest legendary saxophonist David Murray will be performing from Tuesday, 2/18 through Sunday, 2/23. The trio features James Carter on saxophones, Hammond B3 organist Gerard Gibbs, and drummer Leonard King. Shows at 8 and 10pm.
Other upcoming performances include Shirley Horn, Oscar Peterson, Christian McBride, Abbey Lincoln, and Brandford Marsalis.
