Whether she was singing about getting back “Home“, or “The Comfort of a Man“, or “Feeling Good All Over“, or how she “Never Knew Love Like This“, or that “Two Hearts” are always better, or feeling that “Sweet Sensation“, or watching out for “Pilot Error” for you may need the “Medicine Song” to let you know that you’re a “Winner” and “You Can Get Over” whatever ails your heart once you’ve “Learned to Respect the Power of Love“, Stephanie Mills has always made you “Put Your Body in It” and “Feel the Fire” of her music.
When you heard the first 4 drum beats of the song “Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin’“, you wondered whether they were playing the radio edit or the extended version. To this day, I still want the 12” vinyl version of this record. Stephanie was widely known for her role as Dorothy in the Broadway production of “The Wiz” for which she received awards and critical acclaim. The album Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin’, which was produced by James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, showcased her musical versatility. The sensual “Feel The Fire” which she also did with Teddy Pendergrass, was warming up the late nights while “You Can Get Over” and “Put Your Body In It” were burning up the disco dance floors. There were also the ballads “Starlight” and “You and I” rounding out this album. No matter what she sings, her heart, soul and body are in it. Enjoy your music.
Yes Sir! Once again you’ve out done yourself …
all i can say is she makes me feel good all over. love stephanie…class act. good choice.
i am going to half.com right now. call me
Oh you’ve taken me way back again. My uncle, bass player extraordinaire used to be in a cover band and the lead singer did a SWEET rendition of Never Knew Love Like This. Of course, she could never top Stephanie, but oh it took me back to the good old days, when I spent summers with my cousins in L.A. I was the country mouse, she was the city mouse. Once again, you’ve outdone yourself 🙂
you know, i’m starting to used to this routine. read your friday flashback and go digging thru the crates of my record collection and spend the weekend listening to old favorites. this is fun and this week i definitely needed an uplifting mood altering experience 🙂 “put your body in it” what was the name of that dance we used to do to that song? the wop? or was it the rock? whatever it was, i’ll be doing it across my living room to that song in a matter of minutes.
oooooh, YES!!
stephanie can blow, with her little self.
I was in L.A. in a grocery store line visiting my favorite cousin. He drove a Z-28 and he popped in what may have been an 8-track at the time….Stephanie Mills’ Whatcha Gonna Do with My Loving. I was young but I never forgot her voice. What a powerhouse.
I dig me some vintage Stephanie. But when she released “Pilot Error” and “Medicine Song”, I had to let her go for a bit. I hated those two songs! Thankgod for “Putting A Rush On Me”.
“I Feel Good All Over” with “the Comfort Of A Man”… *smirk*
i love this flashback. i absolutely love it. remember when stephanie mills had a nose like a fist?
*shaking head* Kevin is so bad…
Kevin is a F O O L! Not a nose like a fist!
She may have had a nose like a fist, but she’s also got a voice like a fist.
