What is the total amount of music files on your computer?
I am old school. I still buy my music in the store or online. My ever-growing collection currently includes 1500+ CD’s and 500 vinyl (yeah I said it!) LP’s.
The last CDs you bought were:
Nicholas Payton – Dear Louis
Nicholas Payton & Sonic Trance – Live in New York
Bobby Hutcherson – Montara
Bobby Hutcherson – The Kicker
Nina Simone – Emergency Ward/It Is Finished/Black Gold (3 classic albums on 2 discs)
Gladys Knight & The Pips – Love Songs
What is the song you last listened to before this message?
Stanley Turrentine – “Something Happens to Me”
Write down five songs you often listen to or that mean a lot to you.
Brenda Russell – “Make You Smile”
This song is from her latest album, Between the Sun and the Moon. She co-wrote the song with Bluey from Incognito. An uptempo Brazilian rhythm combined with Brenda’s melodic vocals and chants. It does not get much better than that. It is definitely a summer groove filled with warm breezes and tropical sun. It definitely makes me smile.
Paula West – “The Snake”
I got to see Paula perform this song at the Monterey Jazz Festival last summer and at The Jazzschool. I have been a devoted fan of her’s ever since. You see, the song tells the tale of a tender-hearted woman who finds a cold, half-frozen snake on her way to work. She takes pity on the snake, takes him in, makes him well, and marvels in the snake’s beauty. In appreciation of her taking care of him, the snake bites her so you know the moral of this story. The song was originally composed and sung by Oscar Brown, Jr. Paula definitely brings new life to this classic tale. It is actually one of the signature songs in her shows. This song is from Paula’s Come What May album.
Andy Bey – “Caravan”
This is just one of the gems on Andy’s, Grammy-nominated album, American Song album. The opening malletts on the cymbals, the licks on the bass and guitar, Andy’s powerful vocals and piano playing, and I was just hooked. Did you get this album yet? If not, why not?
Dianne Reeves – “I’m All Smiles”
Hmmm…I am must have a thing for songs that make me smile. Actually, Dianne got me through a rough patch of life so I played it often. When I got to see her sing it live, I melted.
Shirley Horn – “Here’s to Life”
A timeless gem…
At the beginning of my birthday every year, I turn out the lights, play this song, and reflect on the past year. I find it a great way to start my birthday.
Who are you gonna pass this stick to (three persons and why)?
A.J. (she loves a good meme), Antonio (he needs to be in the mix), and Elle (cuz I know she loves some good music.)
Something told me you had Lizz Wright in your collection. I also didn’t know Brenda had a new CD out…off to the record store I go….
You know you’re gonna get it for this, right?
You know I love being in the scoop!
My Loverboy melts anytime he hears Shirley Horn’s “Here’s to Life”. I keep it on hand for those times when I do something stupid.
That Make Me Smile song reminds me alot of Incognito.
“daddy? what’s vinyl?”
“gee, i’m not sure, son. i think it’s what boots and fine corinthian couches are made of.”
