Remembering Percy Heath – This photo was taken of legendary bassist Percy Heath at the 45th Monterey Jazz Festival in 2002 after an interview that he and his brothers, Jimmy and Albert “Tootie” Heath, did with Orrin Keepnews. Percy, who passed recently, was the last living member of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
The new Lizz Wright album, Dreaming Wide Awake, will be released on June 14. If you need a tasty appetizer while you are waiting, Lizz does a remake of “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” on David Sanborn’s latest album, Closer. Your musical taste buds will thank you.
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt has a new album, Identity, which will be released on July 19. All original material will be featured on this new disc. Samples of the new grooves can be found at http://www.peltjazz.com/mp3.html. I just finished listening to them and they left me wanting more. Jeremy will performing on September 9 and 10 with his quartet at Jazz at Pearl’s in SF and October 25-30 as part of the Clifford Brown 75th Birthday Celebration at Yoshi’s.
I ran across the Essentials of Music Glossary as looking up the meaning of bel canto, which was used to describe the music of Shirley Horn. It is an excellent reference.
Your favorite links for Upcoming Grooves, Cool Music Sites, My Favorite Places to Buy Tunes, and Jazz Clubs and Events have been moved from the front page to the Category section on the right. They are much easier to update as entries now. Hope you enjoy them.

I was so sorry to hear of Percy Heath’s passing. I knew him in the 60’s and saw him last in Chicago in the late 70’s. Great musician, beautiful man. I have him featured in my playlists on my internet classic jazz station “Dimensions in Jazz”. It seems that so many of the tracks I play now feature performers who are no longer with us – but their music lives on.
