June 20, 2006; San Francisco, CA; San Franciscans can occasionally catch sultry singing sensation Kim Nalley tear down the house with her scorching blues and jazz set at her North Beach club, Jazz at Pearl’s. But this July 18, it’s East Bay residents who will have to cool themselves down when Nalley travels across the Bay for a rare performance at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Jack London Square, Oakland.
With performances at 8:00 and 10:00pm, Kim Nalley will present a special tribute to the beloved High Priestess of Soul, Dr. Nina Simone. Paying homage to the fiery vocalist and civil rights activist, Nalley will perform her own inspired versions of incendiary classics from the Simone repertoire, such as “House of the Rising Sun” and “I Put a Spell on You.” The Yoshi’s engagement follows a six-month stretch following the release of Nalley’s critically acclaimed album, She Put a Spell on Me: Kim Nalley Sings Nina Simone.
As SF Station attests with a four-star review, “Nalley doesn’t mimic Simone’s style so much as she captures the rousing spirit of the era in which the High Priestess of Soul performed and, in doing so, makes each number her own. Nalley shows off her soaring, sultry vocals as she powers through an appropriately eclectic set of jazz, blues, showtunes and folk. There is a seductive smoothness to Nalley’s sound that should never be confused with slickness, making She Put a Spell On Me equally accessible to Simone aficionados and jazz neophytes alike. Invariably, her bold voice and impressive range will inspire comparisons to the likes of Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald, but it’s a tribute to Nalley that she distinguishes herself as a unique talent.”
Nalley’s distinguished vocal talent has given her a worldwide reputation for turning a chattering, cocktail-sipping crowd into a rapt audience of lifelong fans in minutes, combining a devastating stage presence with finely tuned powerful voice. A vocalist, bandleader and producer with acting credits include leading roles in “Swing!” and Madame Zinzanni in Teatro Zinzanni, she has recently been named the “Most Influential African-American in the Bay Area” for Entertainment. Pacifica Tribune music journalist Jean Bartlett describes the vocal tour-de-force best by asking, “Ever have that feeling that you’re sitting in on something special – a music, a singer, a style that makes you feel a certain wistful reminiscence for this same night to begin all over again, even though it’s barely begun? That is the effect of a Kim Nalley performance.”
Following several sold-out San Francisco performances of Kim Nalley’s Tribute to Nina Simone, East Bay audiences are sure to feel the full effect of Kim Nalley’s presence in Oakland on July 18.
