February 5, 2007; San Francisco, CA; With three upcoming performances around the regional Bay Area, San Francisco’s sultry chanteuse Kim Nalley is making herself known outside the intimate confines of her regular North Beach performance venue, her “Jazz at Pearl’s” club. The trio of events will showcase Nalley’s powerful jazz singing and signature blues stylings while also celebrating her musical idols, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday. Music fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early, as shows may sell out at each event.
Following a sold-out engagement last year with Hammond B-3 specialist Rhoda Scott, Kim Nalley will return to COPIA, in the heart of Napa Valley, on Saturday, March 10 to perform a special tribute to Dr. Nina Simone, the beloved High Priestess of Soul,. Paying homage to the fiery vocalist and civil rights activist, Nalley will perform her own inspired versions of incendiary classics from the Simone repertoire, such as “House of the Rising Sun” and “I Put a Spell on You.”
The performance at COPIA follows a year-long stretch following the release of Kim Nalley’s critically acclaimed album, She Put a Spell on Me: Kim Nalley Sings Nina Simone. As SFStation.com has noted with a four-star review, “Nalley doesn’t mimic Simone’s style so much as she captures the rousing spirit of the era in which the high priestess of soul performed and, in doing so, makes each number her own. Nalley shows off her soaring, sultry vocals as she powers through an appropriately eclectic set of jazz, blues, showtunes and folk. There is a seductive smoothness to Nalley’s sound that should never be confused with slickness, making She Put a Spell On Me equally accessible to Simone aficionados and jazz neophytes alike.”
Fans have also been drawn in recent months to Kim Nalley’s portrayal of another inspirational vocal hero, Billie Holiday. Last July and August, 2006, Nalley acted and sang in the role of Holiday in a wildly successful run of “Lady Day in Love” at the Fellowship Theater in San Francisco. In a rave review for the Berkeley Daily Planet, Ken Bullock wrote, “The difficulty of portraying Billie the singer and the woman has been solved by the presence of vocalist Kim Nalley, who not only sings Lady Day’s numbers wonderfully, but manages to convey something of the sense of her character.”
Following her successful theatrical run, Kim Nalley is now taking the Billie Holiday songbook to the jazz club stage. Nalley will present the softer side of Billie Holiday with “The Heart of Lady Day” at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland on Tuesday, March 13, and in a special presentation produced by the Palo Alto Jazz Alliance at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge on Sunday, March 18. Interpretting love songs and ballads made famous by Holiday in her own unique style, Nalley will be joined by talented pianist Tammy Hall, guitarist Josh Workman, bassist Mike Zisman and drummer Kent Bryson.
